8 days riding bike in the heart of Umbria

8 days in the green Umbria from Spoleto to Assisi passing through Torgiano immersing ourself in a magnificent landscape among historical centres, medieval villages still intact, olive groves and vineyards where history, nature and culture blend together. 6 quite simple bike tours on gravel or paved roads little busy where day after day we’ll discover the beauty of this land rich in art, traditions, typical products and good eating. The Classic Tour is composed of half-day tours and it’s suitable for all those who love to take not so long rides discovering territories and villages without hurry having time to deepen and to understand all the beauty of this part of Umbria.

GENERAL DIFFICULTY LEVEL: MEDIUM-EASY (the length of the 6 stages is about 25-45 km with ascending altitude differences between 300 and 600 metres).

BICYCLE TYPE: HIKING BIKE or MOUNTAIN BIKE (no road bike)
Meeting at the airport or direclty at the hotel if you’ll arrive by car and transfer to Spoleto.

1st DAY: SPOLETO
Meeting at the hotel at 3:00 pm. Gathering of cyclists. Briefing to speak about the tour to perform and explanation of the 6 stages we’ll do together. In the afternoon guided tour of Spoleto’s historic centre. Dinner at the hotel. Overnight stay.

 

2nd DAY: SPOLETO–TREVI 22,5 Km – ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: up 547 m. - down 454 m., 45% gravel, 55% asphalt.
Departure of the tour at 9:00 am. Today's tour has a difficulty index measured on a scale from 0 to 10 of 4 points. We’ll leave Spoleto passing through the magnificent villages of Eggi, Poreta and Pissignano before starting the final ascent towards Trevi. The route is a continuous climb up and down with short ascents but not too much demanding. Oil and typical food tasting as a light lunch in an olive-press during the tour. Arrival in Trevi, hotel accommodation. Free afternoon to dedicate to the visit of the village or relax. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.

3rd DAY: TREVI - FOLIGNO 26,7 Km – ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: up 309 m. - down 487 m., 55% gravel, 45% asphalt.
Departure of the tour at 9:00 am. Today's tour has a difficulty index measured on a scale from 0 to 10 of 2 points. We’ll leave Trevi descending to the splendid Clitunno river springs where, if you want, you could get a visit paying a ticket. We’ll continue along the course of the Clitunno river on gravel roads that will bring us to the very important church of S.Maria di Pietrarossa and the S.Eraclio’s castle. Then we'll arrive in Foligno, one of the most important centers of the umbrian valley. Light lunch during the tour in Casco dell’Acqua’s village. Today's route is very simple; descent from Trevi to the plan, then always pedaling on the plan towards Foligno. Arrival in Foligno, hotel accommodation. Free afternoon to visit the city or relax. Dinner, overnight stay at the hotel.

 

4th DAY: FOLIGNO-BEVAGNA-FOLIGNO 27,8 Km – ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: up 247 m.- down 247 m. 50% gravel, 50% asphalt.
Departure of the tour at 9:00 am. Today's tour has a difficulty index measured on a scale from 0 to 10 of 2 points. We’ll leave Foligno following the course of the Topino river and then we'll deviate untill the Aiso lake. From here, restart towards Bevagna to visit one of Italy's most beautiful villages and to have a light lunch, then we'll return back to Foligno. Even today's route is very simple; only plain with a few, easy and short climbs and descents. Light lunch in Bevagna, return in Foligno, dinner, overnight stay at the hotel.

5th DAY: FOLIGNO-MONTEFALCO 34,3 Km – ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: up 562 m. - down 323 m., 50% gravel, 50% asphalt.
Departure of the tour at 9:00 am. Today's tour has a difficulty index measured on a scale from 0 to 10 of 4 points. We'll leave Foligno and through the typical agricultural landscape of the umbrian valley we’ll arrive until Madonna della Stella’s Sanctuary. From here it will begin the ascent towards Montefalco, city of art and birthplace of Sagrantino, famous red wine all over the world. Light lunch and Montefalco’s wine tasting at Le Cimate winery. Today's route is completely flat untill Madonna della Stella’s Sanctuary. The climb towards Montefalco is about 8 km long and proceeds with a regular trend and with slopes always around 5-6 % excluding two stretches 200 metres long (about 9-10 %). Arrival in Montefalco, hotel accommodation. Free afternoon to visit the city or relax. Dinner, overnight stay at the hotel.

 

6th DAY: MONTEFALCO-CANNARA-SPELLO-ASSISI 39,5 Km – ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: up 544 m. - down 614 m., 35% gravel, 65% asphalt.
Departure of the tour at 8:00 am. Today's tour has a difficulty index measured on a scale from 0 to 10 of 5 points. We’ll leave Montefalco gradually descending on very panoramic roads. We’ll continue to ride on the plain towards Cannara and in particular towards Piandarca where according to the tradition, San Francesco D'Assisi made the "Predica agli Uccelli" miracle. From here we'll ride always on the plan towards Spello, important city of Roman origins rich in archaeological finds and testimonies of a glorious past. Light lunch and wine tasting in a winery. The it will start the ascent towards Assisi (6 km with slopes never over 10%) Today's route has a medium difficulty; descent from Montefalco to the plan, then always in plan towards Spello passing through Cannara and Piandarca. Then ascent towards Assisi. Arrival in Assisi, hotel accommodation. In the afternoon guided tour of the city. Dinner, overnight stay at the hotel.

 

7th DAY:7th DAY: ASSISI-TORGIANO-ASSISI 44,4 Km – ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: up 506 m. - down 506 m., 25% gravel 75% asphalt.
Departure of the tour at 9:00 am. Today's tour has a difficulty index measured on a scale from 0 to 10 of 4,5 points. We’ll start from Assisi descending until S.Maria degli Angeli. Then we’ll pedal on the plan before a short ascent towards Brufa. From here we’ll descent untill Torgiano. Light lunch and wine tasting in a winery. After lunch we’ll return back towards Assisi passing through the rural villages of Costano and Tor d’Andrea. Today's route is quite simple a part from the final ascent (2,5 km) arriving in Assisi.
For the rest of the tour we’ll pedal generally on the plan. Arrival in Assisi, hotel accommodation. Free afternoon to visit the city or relax. Dinner, overnight stay at the hotel.

 

8th DAY: GOODBYE
All beautiful things come to an end and now it's time to say goodbye. In the morning after breakfast, we'll make the transfer to the airport or you’ll start your way back home by your own means.
